The Xerces Blue Butterfly was a species of butterfly (called Gossamer Wing butterflies), that lived on coastal sand banks in the San Francisco Peninsula. The last ones were seen in the early 1940s, due to urbanization and the loss of habitat. They had a wide variety of wing patterns, which are represented in this sampler.
