Ikat is made by tying and dying strands of yarn, and then weaving them; which creates the pattern you see. Slight variations in the dyed strands give it the classic ikat look. Without hard borders, the designs feel a little freer and looser while still being completely geometric and pleasing. Yarn dyes are one of my absolute top fabrics; it means you can use either side of the fabric (yay, reversible!), and you don't have the same fading issues that prints sometimes suffer from.
This is a looser weave shirting, it's wonderfully soft and lofty. The resulting garments have a nice weight, lovely hang and drape, and are extremely comfortable. I personally find that this cotton doesn't wrinkle as much as some (I make no anti-wrinkle claims though, only that this seems to wrinkle slightly less).
Due to how this is dyed and woven, there may be some variations in weave, pattern, and colour. Occasionally, there is a strand of a brighter colour, or a variation in tone. The pattern may miss a repeat or line up slightly differently. There are all wonderful and typical variations and should be celebrated as the unique qualities of this fabric.
I would like to note that straight off the bolt, some of these ikats have a slight odor of dye or mordant; this seems to clear with washing and does not linger on any of the garments I've made with these fabrics. However I want to make a note of it for those who are more sensitive to scent.
**Please note that due to the dark colour of this fabric, there may be some additional dye loss in the first few washings. we recommend washing it several times, separately form other items, before sewing. **

Fabric is priced and sold by the 1/4 metre. We cut multiple 1/4 metres continuously. For example; 2 units is 1/2m, 3 units is 3/4m, 4 units is a full metre, 5 units is 1.25m. A single 1/4 metre will be cut as a fat quarter, unless you request a skinny quarter. Fat Quarters are half the width of the fabric x 0.5m, whereas Skinny Quarters are the full width of the fabric x 0.25m. We do this so you can order just as much fabric as you need, to decrease fabric wastage.
